Changes in the Polish Classification of Activities from 2025 – what do you need to know?
by Marcin Tomczak on Jan 20, 2025
The new Polish Classification of Activities (PKD 2025) came into effect on January 1, 2025. This is a significant change for entrepreneurs, aimed at adapting the PKD coding system to contemporary economic realities and the statistical requirements of the European Union. It's worth preparing for the upcoming changes to avoid formal and legal challenges.
Why were changes introduced to PKD?
The previous version of the Polish Classification of Activities (PKD), introduced in 2007, no longer fully reflects the dynamically changing economic environment. The development of new technologies, the digital economy, environmental initiatives, and the growing role of the circular economy have necessitated updating the codes. PKD 2025 better incorporates these innovations and organizes the classification of activities in a more precise and understandable manner.
An additional goal of the changes is to facilitate running a business and better align PKD codes with economic statistics, both at the national and international level.
What changes does PKD 2025 introduce?
-
New activity codes.
PKD 2025 introduces additional categories of activities that were not previously included, such as activities related to the digital economy, bio-economy or energy produced from renewable sources. -
Removal of obsolete codes.
Some PKD codes that refer to activities with decreasing market importance will be removed or merged with other categories. -
Harmonized with EU standards.
The update aims to better integrate the Polish system with the classifications used in other European Union countries.
What do the changes mean for entrepreneurs?
The changes to the Polish Classification of Activities (PKD) apply to all entrepreneurs conducting business activity. Companies registered before January 1, 2025, will have two years to adapt their PKD codes to the new classification.
If they do not update within this time, registration systems such as the National Court Register (KRS) or the Central Registration and Information on Business (CEIDG) will automatically assign new codes based on special transition keys.
New entrepreneurs who will start a business after 1 January 2025 will immediately be obliged to use PKD 2025 when registering their company.
How to prepare for change?
To properly adapt to the new classification, it is recommended to:
- Analyzing current PKD codes : Check whether your current codes will still be valid in the new classification.
- updating entries in public registers : If you are planning to introduce changes to your company, it is worth taking into account the new PKD codes immediately.
- consultations : An expert will help you interpret the changes and adapt your business to the new requirements.
Summary
PKD 2025 is a significant change that will impact all businesses in Poland. The new classification aims to facilitate business operations, better reflect economic reality, and harmonize statistics with EU standards. It's worth preparing for the upcoming changes now to avoid formal issues and ensure business continuity.
